Anytime dining pros and cons

Carnival Cruise Lines - boards.cruisecritic.com
I have only been on one other cruise with my girlfriend and we selected late dining. The service and food in the MDR were so bad we didn't eat there the rest of the cruise. I couldn't tell if it was because we were the later dining option or we just had a bad crew.

This time we will be cruising on the imagination with our two teenage kids and I'd like for us to actually use the MDR every night.

So in your experience is the service for early dining or anytime dining better? Also what are the pros and cons of anytime dining? I hear one pro is that you can always get a private table for your party which would be great seeing that my kiddos are kinda shy and with our luck we would be seated with the ultra extrovert drinkers. Which isn't a bad thing when it's just us having a romantic trip but this is more of a family trip. Thanks in advance!
