Moving to CO from CT at 20

Colorado Forum - Relocation, Moving, Local City Discussions - City-Data Forum - www.city-data.com
Looking for advice from anyone who was once in a similar situation and people who are generally knowledgeable with this sort of issue.

WHO - I'm a 20 year old male full time worker at a hardware store making $11.10 an hour. I bring home roughly $1300 a month. That's what I get for being 20 without college I suppose. My girlfriend of four years and her family moved to Lafayette, CO which is the biggest factor in my decision to move. I live in Fairfield County, CT with my mom and little brother where 10x10 studios cost $1100. (Slight exaggerattion). So unless I'm bringing home at LEAST $2000 a month living around here alone is not a viable option. Without a car and a college education it'd be nearly impossible for me to make "that kind of money." Colorado on the other hand is nearly 40-45% cheaper when it comes to literally everything. Sure minimum wage is lower but with my experience and private education I tend to make a good impression with employers and I bet I can earn something slightly higher than minimum wage.

BUDGET - I have $440 saved and I'll be collecting two more checks from work before I move. I'm trying my hardest to find a room for rent ($500 max/month with utilities) but all of my messages have yet to see a reply. My girlfriend will be helping me with basics such as toiletries, some food, and she will provide me with transportation. I'll need to pay for rent, some food, phone bill, and I'll help her with gas money for driving me around. I can't do a lease as I don't have enough money for that first and last month rent plus security BS. I'll be doing a month to month shared home room rent. I'm looking to join a credit union before I leave because I have no credit and I need to build it for a small loan to buy a cheap reliable Japanese car eventually. I'm also going to have to buy an air mattress until I can finance a real mattress. My dad works for Mattress Firm so I'll get a lot of help there. My girlfriend is paying for my flight which we think will be on August 6th but I can always stay and work an additional two weeks to get a third check before I leave. I'll be bringing my clothes, laptop, and some various small items. I will however need to ship out the computer I built and my Logitech Z-5500 speaker set. Together they probably weigh over 100lb which will be costly, but I might be able to get some help from my dad with that.

If I need to stay in a motel for a few days once I get there because I was unable to find a place that's fine. My dad and I lived in a motel after my parents got divorced for my entire senior year of high school which I started at 16 years old. My mom got the 3600sqft house that my dad bought which I left for my dad. I'm a survivor. Going days on canned fruit because child support was taken from my dads checks before he got them and we were left with virtually nothing after the motel bill and gas to get to work and school. His credit was shot from the divorce and we were unable to save for an apartment. Eventually my girlfriends family helped us with the downpayment for a basement apartment.

I don't need furniture or any of that just something to sleep on and something to put my clothes in. I know you're supposed to have more money saved than I do and you shouldn't assume you can just wing it, but after my experiences I've learned to live bare bones with ease when necessary.

The plan is to first get a basic retail job, establish credit, get a loan for a car, get a car, work for my girlfriends aunt in construction once I get a car starting out at $20/hour, then I will go to school to major in computer engineering.

Any suggestions that would make this plan a little more stable would be greatly appreciated! Thank you for reading!!!
