Genetic map of Europe - some observations
So I found this map a while ago, it's very interesting. One can see the Roman/Italian influence on the populations of Spain, Portugal and Romania where they overlap, Greeks appear closely related to South Slavs, Czechs are kind of in the middle of everything.
One surprise on the map is how Norwegians and Danes are apparently more closely related to English and Celts than they are to Swedes! That might be the choice of location sampling though - Dublin is known to be highly Viking-influenced and they picked a point in the extreme SE of England and the east side of Sweden. Italians and Finns are the outliers on this map, Finland is just kinda floating by itself though I imagine it would probably cluster closest to Estonia and northwestern Russia and maybe Latvia and Lithuania.
The residents of Barcelona are quite closely related to southern French and to the Swiss. The French on the whole appear to be most closely related to German speaking people, pretty much no overlap with the English or the Italians though a considerable amount with the Spanish.
I was somewhat surprised with how little overlap there was between the Germans and the English, only a little corner. The Dutch however appear very closely related to the English.
