Adjusting To The Heat & Humidity In The South

North Carolina Forum - Relocation, Moving, Local City Discussions - City-Data Forum - www.city-data.com
Hi all, I'm a newbie to the south. Only been here in north Raleigh a couple weeks coming from the Olympic Peninsula of Washington state which I now miss more than I thought I would. Who'd have thunk it, lol. Being an older lady I moved here to be closer to family, and because of a very unpleasant divorce. A fresh start. I've read a lot about the area, but no amount of reading can prepare a person for first hand experience. For me the heat, and humidity hits me like a brick wall. It feels like I'm swimming through the air, or drowning. Yet I see people running when it's beastly outside. They must have a completely different physical constitution. Cool, and damp I enjoy, and can handle. It makes me feel good. But the other end of the spectrum is much too intense for me. I had expected to find "normal" fall weather when I got here in early October so I could get used to it out here gradually. Rofl, NOT! I see halloween displays outside, and I think "Yeah, right". I guess it's normal for this part of the world, but i was still surprised. My daughter, and grand daughter love it here. It must have skipped a generation.

I suppose it's good for your skin, sweating out all the impurities, and crud. I need all the help I can get in that respect, lol. So I am interested in people's stories, if they ever got used to these conditions, or not. Or do you suffer even though you were born here? Do you love it, hate it, or are indifferent? When I was in line at the post office the other day I asked the ladies in line if you ever get used to it while sopping the sweat off my face from my walk there. They all said no ;oD. So I'm trying to save up to move to Boone eventually where it is more tolerable. Having lived in colorado, and connecticut that have cold winters I could deal with that better than this. Don't want to stay inside in air conditioned comfort for half of my remaining life. Thank you all ahead of time for your kind responses.
