Baggage query United Airlines
I have a question about carry-on rules and baggage fees for an upcoming United Airlines flight, please.
I have looked at United's website and am hoping the experts here will please confirm if I am reading the rules correctly.
Please forgive me if this topic comes up frequently. I used to fly several times per year for leisure travel, but due to complicated and unfortunate circumstances, with which I will not bore you, have not been able to travel as I was used to doing, for a few years now, and so I am out of practice, as it were. I also admit I have not stayed current on rules and regulations.
I am traveling from CMH to EWR this week on United Airlines. Both my flights are operated by United Express carriers (Express Jet to Newark, and Republic from Newark). I believe the flight to EWR with Express Jet is an Embraer RJ145, and the flight with Republic is an Embraer RJ170.
My fare class is United Economy (Q). I do have a Mileage Plus account with United, but no Premier status.
Am I able to take my carry-on bag (in addition to my personal item) to the gate, and gate-check it free of charge, or will I be charged a baggage check fee ($25), and also possibly an additional fee for checking at the gate (another $25), at either CMH and/or EWR? My carry on does meet the size requirements and will be well under 50 pounds.
The way I read the rules, I think I am okay to gate check my bag for no additional charge, because the flights are operated by United Express. However, the language about Basic Economy fare holders only being permitted to take one personal item on board, and being charged the baggage fee plus a gate check fee, concerns me.
I would prefer to take my bag with me to 1) avoid the baggage fees and 2) not have to wait to claim my bag. In the past I tended to gate-check my bag for these reasons but, as I said above, I have not flown in a couple of years.
While it certainly won't break the budget, I'd rather know in advance. If I'm going to have to pay a fee to check my bag anyway, then there is no point in schlepping it through security--I'll just pay up front and check it and be finished.
Thank you for considering my query, and for any assistance you may be able to offer. Your help is appreciated.
