Food and local colour around Wall St?

New York City Forum, Travel Discussion for New York City - TripAdvisor - www.tripadvisor.com
Posting for my husband, who will be travelling to New York for the first time for business next week. He's got most of Sunday to explore (arriving at JFK around 7 am). His hotel is the Holiday Inn Express Wall St., which is close to where he'll be Mon-Tues for work.

His top request is good traditional deli hopefully not too far from that area.

He would like to go where he can experience local life; we love hanging around in grocery stores when we travel. I'm guessing the immediate area is not going to be rife with that kind of thing, but maybe close by? Or markets/specialty food places? Probably not looking for museums, but maybe parks, colourful neighbourhoods, or interesting architecture.

Other food--again, things that are particular to the area. He's an enthusiastic eater of ethnic food, and willing to experiment. He prefers "cheap eats"/holes-in-the-wall kinds of places.

Your thoughts?
