Is Spanish spoken in NYC?

New York City Forum, Travel Discussion for New York City - TripAdvisor - www.tripadvisor.com
So this may seem like a funny question. I also feel like I asked it maybe five years ago, but I don't remember what the response was.

I'm preparing to go to a country where I don't speak the language, and I was just now reading Javier's trip report. That made me wonder what the experience of Spanish speaking travelers coming to NY is like. I know that in my neighborhood, many people seem to speak Spanish, and that we have local Spanish language newspapers and TV stations. While you obviously have to use English most of the time here, do Spanish speaking travelers ever find that they can operate in their native language as they travel around the city? Or is the Spanish spoken here in places and by people which aren't useful to travelers? I don't want to hear from locals here, more from Spanish-speaking travelers who have visited.
