Why English?

Europe Forum - Relocation, Moving, Local City Discussions - City-Data Forum - www.city-data.com
Latin was spoken in Latium, an area of central Italy. It was the language of the Romans, who founded their city of Rome in Latium. The closest descendant of Latin is Italian. Most of Italy spoke their local dialects the 1900s, when Italian, mainly spoken around Tuscany, was promoted in schools. Latin is fairly easily to understand by Italians if I am not mistaken. As the Roman Empire went east, the tribes of Spain learned the language, and this developed into Spanish. English has many Latin words but they were really imported from France. France is the least similar to the other Romance languages I think. So why don't us in the UK speak a romance language? Britain was a Roman province, except Scotland , Latin was an important language. When Germanic tribes invaded they brought Germanic dialects that ended up becoming what is known today as Old English. Other Roman provinces, like France, Spain and Portugal, were invaded by other Germanic tribes. But, instead of imposing their own languages, the invaders became Romanized and started speaking the local Latin dialects. If that process had also happened in Britain, they would probably be speaking a Romance language today. I would prefer a Romantic language to be honest!

Just think most of the world would be speaking Italian or Spanish - would have been easier to watch movies without subtitles
