Family trip - 3 weeks - start & finish NY- ideas!
I'm just beginning planing our 3 week August holiday and I'm not sure where to head off to after a couple of days in New York. We are a UK family with two little kids (5&7)
I'm after a sort of road trip, maybe staying 5 days or so in different locations to use as a base to explore. Rather than a night or two here and there.
We would like a nice taste of American culture, history and food. We're not interested in theme parks as we have Disney and all that in Europe. We visited Western USA a few years ago and the landscapes and cities where so different. The huge scale of everything from mountains to food portions was really fun and exciting. I'm hoping to find similar experiences on the East coast.
The obvious choice looks like heading up to New England, Maine and Vermont etc. But I just can't get excited about it. It all looks a bit too much like actual England. We have lighthouses all over the bloody place. I know this sounds (and is) shamefully crass. Have I got it all wrong, is it exciting and uniquely American? Do they just put too many lighthouses in the tourist info?
So any ideas of where to go that will show us what we can't get in Europe would be great.
Thank you in advance
