Oyster card or contactless payment, same price?

London Forum, Travel Discussion for London - TripAdvisor - www.tripadvisor.com
Listening to a BBC money box podcast the head of the tube network was explaining that contactless payment was the same as using an Oyster card. Is this really true. We visit London perhaps once a year an have used our Oyster cards every year. We use the tube and bus in zone 1 and 2, occasionally further afield.

Should we be cashing in our Oyster cards, getting our deposit back (£5 I think) and use our UK issued contactless payment Debit cards.

Our next trip is planned for two weeks over April/May 2016. We will be based in Chelsea.
