Refunds for return flight only?

Air Travel Forum - TripAdvisor - www.tripadvisor.com
Hello,

I recently booked a Brazil-US ticket with American Airlines and flew the first leg. Before my return happened, one of my flights was changed, which qualified me for a free refund if I don't like any of my other options (I don't). That said, they said they were unable to tell me how much the refund would be for (since I've already used half the ticket, so it wouldn't be a full refund) until I requested it, and then I wouldn't have the option to keep my original ticket anymore. This doesn't seem right - has anyone been through this? I want to ask for a refund but I also don't want to be locked into accepting a ridiculously low amount just because I've asked for it. If they refund me about half the trip, I'll be very happy, but what's to say they won't come up with some nonsense like "your return was a lower fare so here's $100 back" or something? How do I deal with this?
