Road trip from CA to Las Vegas
I’m planning on visiting the US in mid/late May until June next year and we are going to rent a car to drive from LA to San Jose to see friends. We are planning on spending a couple of days there before going on a long road trip.
We want to go from San Jose via Yosemite, Death Valley and to possibly see the Grand Canyon before ending the drive in Vegas.
I’d really appreciate any routes and suggestions for places to spend the night along the route. We plan on leaving San Jose early (maybe 7am or so), due to the advice I got on the Vegas forum about traffic being bad coming out of San Jose after 2pm, and obviously would love to see great sites in the places mentioned before during daylight hours. We will occasionally want to stop for photos and the like, and we wouldn’t mind spending 2-3 nights overnight in hotels along the route.
Another concern I had (probably needlessly) is that we are planning on renting a mustang or camaro for the trip and we’re wondering if the fuel efficiency is enough to get us easily between locations. Back home I drive a Mercedes that could probably do the whole trip on 2 tanks of fuel with lots spare. Are there regular gas stations along the way?
Lastly I'd like to ask if there's any way to secure a specific car with a rental company that we'd be picking up in LA and dropping off around 4-5 days later in Vegas?
