Start of February Trip: Pre-booking necessary?

Rome Forum, Travel Discussion for Rome - TripAdvisor - www.tripadvisor.com
Hi,

I'm wondering, for a 5 day trip at the start of February, which I've been told is low-season, is it still necessary to book things in advance?

If so, what would you recommend? In general, my companion and I dislike prebooking since we like to decide on a day itself what we want to do. But if it is required, e.g., mandatory to have tickets or long queues, we will of course oblige.

Also, for a 5-day trip, would you recommend some kind of city pass, such as the Roma Pass? We like to go fast and quick through museums taking in the highlights mostly.
