Suggestions for a United Kingdom tour

United Kingdom Forum - Relocation, Moving, Local City Discussions - City-Data Forum - www.city-data.com
Hello from the United States-- metropolitan Washington DC to be exact. My husband and I are planning a fall 2018 trip to the United Kingdom -- we have never been to Europe! We were going to fly on our own to London and spend 4 days seeing the sights on our own. We then wanted to maybe find a good small tour that would take us through the rest of England and Scotland. Would love to see some of the Scottish islands. We could stay 2 to 3 weeks if necessary. We are in our 60's but very physically fit -- I don't want to drive a car though. Not crazy about my husband's driving! Any suggestions?

Also we are thinking mid September to mid October. Any problems with that time of year?
